Squam Lakes Association's Summer Positions:

Squam Conservation Internship (8 Positions)

The Squam Conservation Internship gives future conservation leaders the skills and experience needed to effectively move onto the next professional level while at the same time helping the Squam Lakes Association (SLA) with our conservation mission.  This unpaid internship will provide hands-on conservation work experience and certifications over a broad range of activities.  Interns will serve as campsite hosts and caretakers at our backcountry campsites, help with the eradication of variable milfoil, perform water quality testing and monitoring, help with public education and outreach projects, perform conservation duties such as shoreline restoration and trail maintenance and construction, meet and greet lake users and educate them about the dangers of invasive species.

Squam Conservation Interns will receive the following as a part of the internship:

1. Scuba diving certification
2. Weed control diver certification
3. Lake Host certification
4. NH Safe Boating certification
5. NH Commercial boating license
6. Basic first aid & CPR certifications
7. Housing with kitchen facilities
8. Travel stipend (intern location dependent)
9. Weekly Food stipend ($75/wk)

Qualifications:

1. Candidate must be 18 years of age on or before June 1, 2013
2. Have a valid United States driver’s license
3. Be a competent swimmer capable of swimming 500 yards
4. Should have snorkeling experience
5. Ability to carry and use heavy tools while hiking
6. Able to hike at least 8 miles in a day.
7. Available May 23, 2013 through August 22, 2013.  (end date negotiable)

Camp Director (one position)

Under general direction, plans, coordinates, conducts, and supervises the activities and operations of  the Squam Lakes Association Youth Programs with a focus on nature, ecological research, community service, and teambuilding activities The Summer Camp Director will directly supervise six Environmental Camp Leaders and one Assistant Camp Director whom are responsible for campers in grades 3-12.  Must be able to help plan and Implement a week long safety and educational staff training session prior to start of camp. Ability to schedule camp personnel and volunteers weekly along with instructing camp staff in the performance of specific duties. Plan for day to day logistics dependent on changing weather conditions, camper abilities and staffing . Work with Office Staff in assisting with camp registrations along with preparing  records and reports as requested.  Must be able to enforces all regulations pertaining to the health and safety of campers and staff at all times. Responsible for the care and maintenance of equipment and facilities along with ordering and maintains supplies each week. 

Oualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a natural resource / environmental education field and previous experience in a responsible leadership position required. Must be over 25, able to pass a national criminal history background check and hold a valid state driver’s license.  Ability to work outdoors including hiking, paddling skills and lifting moderately heavy objects. Have a strong sense of safety and risk management procedures. Experience educating children about environmental topics. Hold a current certification in First Aid, CPR and AED. Ability to establish an effective working relationship with parents, employees, and the general public.  Knowledge of and experience in planning , coordinating, organizing, and implementing  outdoor and environmental activities for children. Ability to develop and implement a variety of creative activities on a consistent basis.

Schedule: This position will start as early as June 3. Staff Training occurs June 17-21. Camp runs Monday-Friday, June 24- August 9. The last day of  work will be Friday, August 16th. Hours: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Some weekend work may occasionally be required.

Salary and Benefits: $13-$14/hour based on experience.  SLA benefits include use of canoes, kayaks and store discounts.

Assistant Camp Director (one position)

The Assistant Camp Director will assist the Director of Education in all programmatic, safety, and administrative components of camp. The Assistant Camp Director will support the Youth Program Manager in the daily operations of camp and directly supervise the overnight portion of the JSLA Program.  The Assistant Camp Director will assist in the administrative aspects of camp: oversee the health and safety of campers; communicate with parents; assist in the supervision of camp staff and high-school aged volunteers; and help camp staff with program planning and substitute teach when needed. The Assistant Camp Director will be the primary responsible staff member and is expected to participate in the overnight portion of the program scheduled for Thursday nights.

Qualifications: Applicant must be at least 25 years old and have at least three years of teaching experience in a camp or environmental education center setting. Must have knowledge of environmental education techniques and activities. Applicant must enjoy being with children in grades 3-9 and a desire to share outdoor experiences with them. Must have the ability to lead groups over rough terrain and be able to work both cooperatively and independently. Must be comfortable in a leadership role, have strong interpersonal skills, have an enthusiastic and positive attitude, a love of nature and have a willingness to learn. Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, computer skills in areas such as word processing, spreadsheets, and a strong commitment to high quality customer service. Current certification in Lifeguarding, CPR and First Aid or an equivalent current certification is highly recommended. Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) & Sex Offender Registry Information (SORI) is required and provided by the SLA.

Schedule: This position will start as early as June 10. Staff Training occurs June 17-21. Camp runs Monday-Friday, June 24- August 9. The last day of  work will be Monday, August 12th. Hours: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Salary and Benefits: $440 per week.  SLA benefits include use of canoes, kayaks, and store discount.

Environmental Camp Leader (six positions)

Environmental Camp Leaders are responsible for campers in grades 3-9 during our summer camp located at the Squam Lakes Association in Holderness, NH. Junior Squam Lakes Association Programs focus on nature, ecological research, community service, and teambuilding activities.Environmental Camp Leaders develop, plan, and implement age-appropriate nature-based activities, including hiking, backpacking, canoeing and kayaking, games and crafts. Environmental Camp Leaders supervise the health and safety of campers and must have a strong sense of safety. Must be able to provide leadership for campers and counselors in training. Each session includes an off-site overnight on Thursday nights.

Qualifications: Applicants must be at least 18 years old with a clean driving record. Have an interest and general knowledge of natural history and/or education. Have or working toward a bachelor’s in environmental studies, biology, education or related field is a plus. Must have previous experience working with and enjoy being with children; have the ability to lead groups over rough terrain and be able to work both cooperatively and independently, have a positive attitude, love of nature, and a willingness to learn. Applicants should have experience in canoeing and kayaking encompassing a strong water safety experience. Current certification in Lifeguarding, CPR and First Aid or an equivalent current certification is highly recommended. Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) & Sex Offender Registry Information (SORI) is required and provided by the SLA.

Squam Conservation Corps (SCC) Leaders

SCC Leaders are responsible for young adults in grades 9-12 at the Squam Lakes Association in Holderness, NH. SCC programs focus on nature, ecological research, community service, and teambuilding activities. SCC leaders are responsible to develop, plan, and implement conservation related skill development, including trail work, invasive species identification and removal,  backpacking and camping skills, canoeing and kayaking skills, along with teamwork to accomplish needed conservation programs with like-minded organizations.  SCC Leaders supervise the health and safety of young adults and must have a strong sense of safety. A strong background in leadership, conservation ethics and backcountry travel skills is an important component in this program. The first session is a day program, Monday through Friday.  The second session is a week long program with three overnights.

Qualifications: Applicants must be at least 18 years old and have an interest and general knowledge of natural history and/or education. Have or working toward a bachelor’s in environmental studies, biology, education or related field is a plus. Must have previous experience working with and enjoy being with children; have the ability to lead groups over rough terrain and be able to work both cooperatively and independently, have a positive attitude, love of nature, and a willingness to learn. Applicants should have experience in canoeing and kayaking encompassing a strong water safety experience. Current certification in Lifeguarding, CPR and First Aid or an equivalent current certification is highly recommended. SLA Resource Center Staff (Boat Rentals & Facility Maintenance) (3 Positions)

Description: The SLA is looking for motivated and enthusiastic individuals for the SLA Resource Center Staff.  Duties of the Resource Center Staff include but are not limited to the following:  Process boat rental reservations, liability waivers, and collect boat rental fees; Inspect and maintain rental craft and equipment; instruct customers in rental craft orientation and basic instruction; Ensure safety practices are adhered to; Monitor the boat ramp inspecting watercraft entering and exiting the lake for invasive species (i.e. Variable Milfoil, Zebra Mussel), informing/educating boaters about invasive species, and collect parking fees; Maintain the grounds and waterfront area of the Resource Center; Greet visitors and provide them with information regarding the Squam Lakes area, the SLA and SLA programs;  Perform other miscellaneous tasks as required.   The successful applicant will report directly to the Director of Recreation and support the needs of the Executive Director, SLA Board and Committees.   We are looking for three individuals (two full time and one part time).

Qualifications:

1. Applicant must be 18 years of age or older
2. Have a valid driver’s license
3. Available to work weekends
4. Have good communication skills
5. Have a pleasant demeanor
6. Ability to work with others as a part of a team
7. Be a self-motivated individual capable of working on projects independently

Compensation: $8 - $9 per hour depending upon experience.

Hours:  Full time positions ~40 hours a week, Part-time position ~24 hours per week.
