Encouraging people to learn to sail at a young age is the goal of this program. Enrollment is for children ages 8 to 16 and classes are organized in week-long half day sessions. Applicants are required to have swimming ability and instruction includes a combination of classroom and on water training. Instruction will be provided by a U.S. Sailing certified instructor. By the end of the week, students are typically able to fully rig the sailboats and sail on their own.
The SLA instructional fleet includes: six Optimist class dingys for younger and less experienced sailors and four Club Junior class boats for older, more experienced sailors. Since this program is instructional, we encourage parents to discuss the program with their children prior to enrollment.
Sessions 1, 2 and 3 Intermediate Sailing:
These sessions are designed for children aged 10 to 12 who have had some prior sailing experience and for children aged 13 to 16 who have limited to no sailing experience. Instruction is performed using Club Junior class sailboats for two week long half day sessions offered in the afternoon. Students will sail with a partner and alternate forward and aft positions. The class size will be eight with an instructor ratio of 1 to 8. The session will begin similar to the introductory program with swim testing, classroom instruction and capsize/recovery exercises.
