On Wednesday, November 13th, the Squam Lakes Association's Lakes Region Conservation Corps had the pleasure of attending the 17th annual Spirit of New Hampshire Awards in Concord. The Spirit of New Hampshire Awards, hosted by Volunteer New Hampshire, celebrates Volunteers and AmeriCorps programs for making such a positive impact in their communities and helping those in need. This event also coincided with the 25th anniversary of the national AmeriCorps program as a whole. While attending, Lakes Region Conservation Corps members had the chance to chat with Governor Chris Sununu, as well as the CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service, Barbara Stewart, and the Executive Director of Volunteer NH, Gretchen Stallings, about the SLA and what it means to be an AmeriCorps member.
Throughout the event, Lakes Region Conservation Corps members witnessed numerous stories on individual volunteer efforts and the countless ways volunteers shape the area they serve in. At the end of the ceremony, all AmeriCorps members were invited on stage for a group photo with some important figures in the Volunteer New Hampshire community, as well as Governor Sununu, who received the Community Pillar Award, along with his wife, Valerie Sununu. All in all, it was an amazing opportunity for the SLA Lakes Region Conservation Corps AmeriCorps members to represent the Squam Lakes Association and learn about the other programs around the state.
