On September 28th, 2020 the Squam Lakes Association welcomed Cedar 4, an 8-person National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) AmeriCorps crew! While here they'll be busy helping us build the new Whitten Woods Bike Trail in Ashland, the Eastman Brook hiking trail in Sandwich and with other projects on our campus and islands. SLA Director of Trails & Access, Katri Gurney, acquired this crew by applying for an AmeriCorps NCCC Service Grant in Spring of 2020.
Cedar 4 has served together with NCCC for the last year—in their previous project they helped with virtual COVID contact tracing—and building these new SLA trails will be the final project in their year of service. For most of the crew, this is their first time in New Hampshire; their home states include Alaska, Louisiana, California, Florida, Massachusetts, Minnesota, and New York (everyone was quarantined and tested for COVID prior to arriving in NH).
Want to join the NCCC crew on the trails and get some hands-on trail building experience? Sign up for one of our Volunteer Trail Building Days by signing up online here or calling (603) 968-7336. No prior trail building experience needed!
