Speaker Series: The Ham Radio and How it Helped with the Squam Ridge Race

Wednesday, April 19, 2017 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

We host our Squam Speaker Series each month on Wednesday evenings. On the schedule for April is the Central New Hampshire Amatur Radio Club (CNHARC). Back in the fall, the SLA was fortunate to have the club help us in running a smooth and safe Squam Ridge Race with their assistance through Ham Radio operations!  They were especially helpful when the weather turned for the worse and a storm rolled in just before the race began. CNHARC also helped the SLA sweep the trail and account for all the runners after the race, so no one was left behind, especially with an injury.

Amateur Radio offers a unique mix of public service, technology and experimenting with electronics–all with an emphasis on fun. Some hams use their skills to provide communications during emergencies and disasters when all else fails. Others enjoy talking to people across the country and around the globe, participating in contests and building experiments.

During this special Speaker Series, CNHARC will cover how they help out at events like the Squam Ridge Race, sled dog races, marathons, and the foot / bike races on Mount Washington. They will bring along an assortment of radios for everyone to see, and briefly cover how we use them. If time permits CNHARC will do a live demonstration.

Join us to learn how they do it, where the local radio repeaters are, and why this club  is so important to our community. CNHARC supports a wide variety of public service events, sponsors licensing workshops, hosts monthly meetings, provides multiple voice repeater systems and many more activities.

Join us at the Squam Lakes Association, 534 US Route 3, Holderness, NH at 7pm. This program is free and open to the public.
