Squam Watershed Plan Update-July 2016
We've made a lot of progress on the Squam Watershed Plan update, underway since January, 2016:
Here's what's coming up in the Watershed Planning process:
We are conducting a survey at various access points around the watershed. This survey will help us to understand where Squam visitors come from, why they choose Squam, how they use the watershed resources, and what they perceive as important priorities in managing this resource. Surveys will be conducted on Tuesday, July 19th and Saturday, July 23rd. Surveys will also be available at SLA Headquarters during this time period.
We are working to develop a vision for the Squam Watershed. Beginning on July 19th, we will ask for feedback on the following vision statement presented by the Steering Committee: The Squam Lakes Watershed is a unique and special place with clean water; a healthy ecosystem; a vibrant and supportive economy; sustainable land uses and development; and access for all in a manner that respects the carrying capacity of the watershed. We will open an internet forum for comments on the vision statement on July 19th.
In the coming months, we will visit with the planning boards in six watershed towns (Ashland, Center Harbor, Holderness, Moultonborough, New Hampton, and Sandwich). Involvement of municipal government in the Squam Watershed Plan is important. With planning boards we hope to discuss towns' priorities and what they would like to see in the updated Squam Watershed Plan.
