On Friday, August 30th, SLA staff, board members, and volunteers gathered on Bowman lsland to enjoy an afternoon on the lake and celebrate the end of a successful program season.Thank you to all volunteers who gave their time and energy over the spring and summer to SLA conservation and recreation programs - water quality monitoring, trail maintenance, invasive plant removal, boat census, loon chick watch, and special events. Without their support, we would not be able to run these important programs that are making a difference in protecting and conserving the beauty of Squam Lakes and surrounding watershed.
During the event, SLA volunteer Dan Kemp led a guided walk around Moon Island. Last year, Dan completed work on updating interpretive signage on Moon Island as part of his graduate studies at Antioch New England Graduate School. Most recently, Dan uncovered some interesting history, including stories and photographs about Moon Island and the family who owned the island around the turn of the century. Dan was a guest speaker for the Squam Speaker Series last year and we hope to have him back to the SLA in the coming year to present his most recent research.
The SLA offers year-round volunteer opportunities. Coming up this fall: Squam Ridge Race on Sunday, September 22nd and Fall Work Day on Saturday, October 19th. Volunteers are needed for both of these events. Over the fall and winter months, we will work to build on our successes of the past year. We welcome new volunteers to join us at anytime, so please feel free to contact us if you are interested in helping.
